Boulder Mountain is regarded by most anglers as the last great place for fly fishing adventure in the western United States. The first opportunity for a guided fly fishing trip on Boulder Mountain is in April. Much of the Boulder Mountain is still covered with snow and the high elevation remote lakes are still iced over in early April. But near the town of Boulder at a much lower elevation than the Boulder Mountain the ice is gone by the first week of March. The opportunity to cast to trophy sized wild rainbow and brown trout on private waters is a welcome change from winter. There are also very fine small streams , some with private access that are definitely fishable as early as the first week of March.

Later in the summer, from July all the way through October large brookies are biting. These tremendous fish are found in the lakes and beaver ponds on Boulder Mountain...for those who know where to look. The brookie in the image above is quite large but not considered a real monster for this area.

The brook trout in the image above is what you can expect to catch at most of the lakes in northern Utah and the Uinta Mountains. In fact, this small brookie would be considered a good catch at most of the alpine lakes in the west. This fish is mature and healthy, but only 11 inches long.

These are without a doubt some of the largest wild brook trout found anywhere on public land in the United States. The brook trout shown on this website are fish that were caught and released from lakes and beaver ponds on the Boulder Mountain. They are also perfect examples of what you can expect to catch with a fly rod in the course of a day of guided fly fishing on Boulder Mountain.

The image above was taken in mid May, just as the ice has come off of this lake. Can you imagine being there with your fly rod? These brookies are all big fish, averaging in size like the fish in the image below. June 2009 is nearly booked up. If you would like to experience the thrill of catching huge brook trout like these on a fly rod, then now is the time to make that call. There are still many days open in May. The brook trout pictured here are exactly what you can expect to hook and land at many of the lakes and beaver ponds on the Boulder Mountain. There are brook trout on the Boulder Mountain that will surpass the current state record of seven and one half pounds. It is just a matter of time before one comes to the net! Make that call soon before this unique opportunity passes you by .....again!
Boulder is on Scenic Byway 12 midway between Escalante [28 miles] and Torrey [35 miles].This beautiful paved highway runs from the junction with Highway 89 near Bryce Canyon National Park to the junction with Highway 24 near Capitol Reef National Park. If you are planning to visit both of these national parks you will be driving through the town of Boulder.
