Wild Trout Reference Photos CD's

The Wild Trout Reference Photos CD’s contain 150 detailed digital images of every part of the trout anatomy. There are wide shots from various angles and many close-up shots of heads, fins, tails etc.. The images are all taken with quality high resolution digital cameras.

Each image is optimized for computer screens at 72dpi and 1008 pixels wide[14 inches]. This means that they will generally fill the average laptop screen. The images were intended to be printed and will print out very nicely as large as 8.5  X 11. Especially good results are obtained by using standard gloss or satin photo paper.

The Wild Trout Reference Photos CD series was designed specifically for Taxidermists, Replica Artists, Fish Carvers, Painters and Illustrators. Most of these artists already keep an ever growing file of reference photos, mostly clipped from magazines. Magazine clippings have a tendency to pile up and are difficult to keep organized, resulting in a lot of wasted time shuffling through them try to find the right reference photos for the current paint schedule. These CD’s really take the hassle out of finding the right reference photo when you are painting a new mount or fish carving.

While having 150 images on each CD could be considered overkill, the thought here was once you purchase one of these species specific reference photo CD’s, you should never have to search for photos of that particular fish again.

All of the trout in these images were caught with fly rods and barbless flies, handled very gently and then released after being thoroughly photographed. These beautiful fish are all wild and of trophy quality size. There are no stocked fish depicted here. There are no mangled fins or tails. Each fish is a truly magnificent specimen.

After 45 years of fly fishing and the last 25 years as a professional guide I have caught and released or observed my clients catching and releasing hundreds of thousands of trout. I have personally photographed thousands of truly remarkable wild trout in the last decade with professional level high resolution digital cameras. These digital cameras have enabled me to accumulate a huge archive of very fine wild trout photographs. When these images are viewed on the computer, it is amazing to see the extremely fine detail captured by the digital process.

Whenever I attend a wildlife exposition or a taxidermy show I cannot help but notice the common denominator among the fish mounts and carvings. That is the lack of fine detail around the eyes, especially the eyes themselves and the interior of the mouths. Those two areas are often sorely lacking in detail. The eyes are almost always generic mass produced glass eyes from the usual source. When you look at the close-up shots of the trout’s eyes on these CD’s you will be amazed! They look nothing like those glass eyes. Or should I say those glass eyes look nothing like the real thing!

You work very diligently and methodically through your paint schedule trying to come up with the most realistic and lifelike impression of  the fish that is possible. But when it comes to that crucial detail around the eyes and the interior of the mouth many artists might settle for less. Why? Perhaps it is because they just need better reference photos. For example, notice the fine detail in the mouth of the beautiful wild rainbow in the image below.

Do yourself a big favor and get one or more of these great CD's for your next project. You'll save alot of time and effort choosing the right photos from this easy process. You will see a dramatic difference in your finished piece!
